Pedestrian Fabric

Interactive Art: 2008

Inspired by the movement of crowds through urban, public spaces, Pedestrian Fabric visualizes foot traffic into a non-digital quilted pattern. The communal contribution of the crowd defines the pattern and produces the actual work of sewing a quilt.
By use of webcameras, computer vision and custom sewing machine software the data can be gathered and redistributed into a non-screen based map in the form of a quilt.
The quilt is used as a new form of mapping data by transferring the digital into an analog adaptation. The project also pulls from the communal effort and work involved in creating a quilt.
Upon inspection, patterns of flow may reveal similarities to other organic patterns from micro to macro levels such as vein structures of leaves to braided river systems.
